Gilan, a hub for tobacco cultivation
Gilan – Iran's northern province of Gilan produces 600 tons of high-quality tobacco each year, supporting both the local economy and a major tobacco processing facility, a senior agricultural official said.
Saleh Mohammadi, head of Gilan's Agriculture Organization, said tobacco cultivation provides jobs for 600 people in the province; The crop supplies raw material to a major local processing plant, helping reduce the need for foreign currency imports.
“Planting begins in May, with harvesting running from August through October across five pickings. Average yield is 2.5 tons per hectare. Purchases start in mid-September and continue until late February.”
Mohammadi highlighted the exceptional quality of Gilan-grown tobacco and said boosting production would strengthen the province's economy, employment, and industrial output while supporting health-conscious product standards.
