Freshwater aquaculture dominates Iran’s fish farming output

Tehran – Freshwater aquaculture continues to be the backbone of Iran’s fisheries industry, with production reaching an estimated 676,000 tons in 1404 (2025–26), according to the Iran Fisheries Organization.

Speaking during a visit to Chaharmahal and Bakhtiari Province, the Director General of Freshwater Aquaculture Development said preliminary provincial data show that freshwater species accounted for the overwhelming majority of the country’s total aquaculture production of approximately 740,000 tons.

The official noted that 270,000 tons of freshwater output came from cold-water fish, primarily rainbow trout, one of Iran’s most valuable aquaculture products.

Chaharmahal and Bakhtiari maintained its position as a leading trout-producing province, contributing 39,000 tons of the national total and reinforcing its status as a major hub for cold-water fish farming.
