Shahroud a major hub in camel farming, official says
Shahroud – Shahroud County – in north-central Iran - has solidified its position as a powerhouse in camel farming, producing 428 tons of camel meat annually, a figure that represents a staggering 80% of Semnan Province’s total output, according to a senior local agricultural official.
Mohammad Hassan Gharib Majani, head of the Agricultural Management Department of Shahroud, highlighted the region’s strong potential for camel breeding in its most suitable areas.
He identified the sector as a crucial pillar for job creation and sustainable agricultural production in Iran’s hot and arid climates.
Detailing the current state of the industry, Gharib reported, “Shahroud is home to 2,143 fattening camels and 5,600 breeding camels. This substantial livestock base provides a powerful engine for meat production and the expansion of livestock farming uniquely adapted to the region's environmental conditions.”
“Based on our estimates, the 428 tons of camel meat produced annually here accounts for about 80% of Semnan Province’s total share in this sector,” Gharib Majani said.
“This clearly demonstrates Shahroud’s special status in the province’s camel meat supply chain.”
