Iran signs overseas farming contracts for 400,000 hectares

Tehran - The head of the Overseas Farming Project at the Ministry of Agriculture emphasized that overseas crop cultivation is key to addressing Iran’s water scarcity and climate challenges.
“400,000 hectares of overseas farmland secured under contracts, with plans to expand to 2 million hectares by 2027 under
Iran’s 7th Development Plan. 10 million tons of agricultural imports targeted via overseas farming by 2031,” Reza Fotouhi told
ILNA.
He warned that Iran’s arid climate, population growth, and limited soil/water resources make overseas farming "a vital solution
for food security."
Iran has prioritized Tanzania, Kenya, and Eurasian Economic Union members in its overseas farming
projects, the official said.
"Overseas farming isn’t just about production—it’s about securing physical access to food in a water-
scarce future," Fotouhi said.
