Iran achieves over 90 percent self-sufficiency in sugar production

Tehran – Iran’s Ministry of Agriculture has achieved over 90 percent self-sufficiency in sugar production, According to Peyman Hesadi, the director of the Ministry's sugar plants project.

Pointing to the latest status of sugar production and the implementation of self-sufficiency policies under the Seventh Development Plan, Hesadi said that the ministry has effectively fulfilled its obligations, leading to significant progress in sugar beet cultivation and water consumption reduction.

He said that, in addition to expanding autumn sugar beet cultivation and reducing water usage, the average yield of spring sugar beet has increased from 55 tons per hectare in previous years to approximately 65 tons per hectare.

He explained that the ministry’s plan to expand autumn sugar beet cultivation depended on establishing industrial capacity in new cultivation areas or increasing capacity in major existing regions.

“Fortunately, cultivation and production of autumn sugar beet have grown at an acceptable rate, with production reaching over 2.16 million tons in 2024. However, due to insufficient industrial capacity, farmers faced numerous challenges in transporting and delivering their produce, particularly in Khuzestan Province.”
