Bio-based breakthrough slashes olive fly damage by 20 percent in Iran
Gilan – Researchers from the Gilan Agricultural and Natural Resources Research and Education Center and the University of Gilan in northern Iran have developed a novel biological strategy to combat the olive fruit fly (Bactrocera oleae), a major pest threatening olive production worldwide.
The team designed eco-friendly traps using protein-based attractants derived from olive kernel byproducts and fungal metabolites. In field evaluations, these traps outperformed commercial protein traps in capturing both male and female adults. Crucially, the method reduced fruit infestation rates by roughly 20%, signaling a significant step toward minimizing economic losses and enhancing fruit and oil quality.
Unlike conventional chemical pesticides, this approach relies on natural compounds and fungal secondary metabolites, reducing toxic residues and protecting beneficial organisms. It fits seamlessly into Integrated Pest Management (IPM) frameworks, offering a safer, more sustainable alternative for olive growers.
The breakthrough exemplifies how homegrown scientific innovation can address real-world agricultural challenges, paving the way for wider adoption of low-risk, cost-effective, and environmentally sound pest management in Iran's olive orchards.
